To memorize the location of notes on the fretboard (and also to practice smooth position shift of left hand) I use the exercise based on the Scruggs' forward roll TIMTIMTI. Left hand fingers fret the same notes on the G and D strings and there should not be heard any difference than the darker timbre of the note played on thicker D string.

Go up and down the neck and simultaneously sing the names of the played notes. Use also different left hand fingers.
Another version of this exercise uses notes one octave apart:

By this type of exercise you can memorise not only the single notes, but also the voicings of doublestops on the G+d and D+G strings (which are different because of different intervals between open strings: G/d is fifth like on the mandolin, D/G is fourth like on the guitar).
