Patek style tenor banjo
Fingerpicking and frailing in DGdg tuning

Due to the limited bass range and lower number of strings the thumb pattern is modified. I will stress here that the preferred pattern is Root, Root, Fifth, Fifth (and Root, Root, Fifth, Root before chord change).
Travis picking

The DGdg tenor banjo has the regular bass-to-treble order of strings like the guitar - the 4th (D) and 3rd (G) strings are exactly the same. It means that you can adopt various picking patterns from guitar, including so called Travis picking where thumb plays bass notes and index and middle finger play more or less syncopated melody on treble strings.Due to the limited bass range and lower number of strings the thumb pattern is modified. I will stress here that the preferred pattern is Root, Root, Fifth, Fifth (and Root, Root, Fifth, Root before chord change).
